Who is he? What does he do? How did he get like this?
This is the story of Maulstaag Cloudagger
Maulstaag Child
Maulstaag was a kind man a helpful man all his life. Grew up helping those around him. He helped woman, men, common folk and rich whoever needed it so he never denied anybody the help that they sought of him. The town loved him and everyone knew they could count on him. As he got a little older and had the strength to wield a blade he was brought into an order that specialized in swordsmanship. Here they taught him not only how to wield a blade but how to stay out of sight. The town psychic constantly told him whenever she saw him "Good deeds will bring misfortune in the time yet to come." Brushing this off as nonsense Maulstaag continued with his life and training.
Maulstaag Cloudagger Younger Years (18-29)
As Maulstaag aged as did his requests from people in town and even the occasional letter from nearby folk in other towns. This excited Maulstaag as he began to gain some fame around the area allowing him to expand his helpful nature. All was good in his life people even began to offer him coin for his deeds. Training, a place to live, bringing happiness and now some coin, what more could he ask for.
And that's when he saw her...
Ciithia Elmthorn. What he enjoyed most of all was when he could bring a smile to that beautiful face of hers. Unfortunately, she rarely had much she needed help with. One day Maulstaag realized his feelings....he had fallen for her over the years. Eventually, he did get up the courage to ask her out on a date and all went well. Date after date they had together in between his assistance in helping others and other men constantly trying to split them apart due to pure jealousy. Time and time again Maulstaag was able to beat them in a fist fight, usually due to the drinking of these men who never had any courage otherwise.
The Request
A few years had passed and Ciithia and Maulstaag's relationship grew day in and day out and they both knew this. Maulstaag decided it was time, he had to take an arrow to the knee and propose to the love of his life, the woman of his dreams. He decided to spare no expense for her.
He bought the ring costing most of what he had saved up and headed off to finish his plans for the evening. Later that night he took Ciithia out to the tavern to eat and what she had noticed is the candles at their table was a little different. Not in color but in the smell. Maulstaag had purchased two of the rarest candles around. These candles were rare due to the ingredients used came together to produce an aroma Ciithia had spent so much time admiring where she had worked as a child. After the meal, the local bard headed over and began playing some music, not just any music but her favorite, the only song where she'd always tell Maulstaag to give him a large tip. Maulstaag looked on across the table as was smiling and laughing and enjoying the time of her life and then it happened...
He took an arrow to the knee and popped the question. Her reply...was YES! The whole tavern celebrated this event drinking and partying through the night.
The next morning he was greeted by a young boy. Wondering who this boy was and why he was at his door so early in the morning he noticed the boy had a letter in hand to deliver. Maulstaag quickly read over this for the details....help needed...leave as soon as possible....no time to waste. After reading this he quickly relays the message to Ciithia and grabs his things heading off to the meeting place. Upon arrival, he was met with three other men that were armed and assured him they were not enemies but allies as they too were called in to assist with the problem.
Sunset had come as another man arrived making 4. Only this man was not armed but appeared to be the man in charge to give details to the men. As he was giving information and positioning the men the plan had been set in motion.
Maulstaag was attacked as all 4men began engaging in a fist fight clearly with a 4 on 1 how could they lose. As the fight continued on for a few moments Maulstaag began dropping them left and right as it wasn't much different than before aside from the fact they obviously thought this one out. As the 3 armed men lay bloodied on the ground Maulstaag spat put some blood and turned around to finish off the last member of this plot. However as he turned what he didn't expect was the finally clothed man, clearly, the ring leader, had a dagger in hand and attempted to end it swinging at Maulstaag's face. Seeing this just in time he was able to lean back just enough to avoid a lethal blow and drew his tanto and brought it across the final man's throat.
Maulstaag proceeded to the nearest priest to receive aid though it was not as good as the treatment back home he knew he would not survive the travel back. As he laid on the table and the priests and local alchemist went to work he just had one thought on his mind, making it back home to see Ciithia's shining face again. After he was well enough to leave he set out but was told he will never see out of his left eye ever again.
Denying this fact he set out back home however when he arrived some of the locals saw the bandages and greeted him instantly asking if he needed any help but he refused to say he only wanted to get back home to Ciithai. Everyone backed off at the utter of her name and Maulstaag knew something was wrong. He ran home and Ciithia was not around and so he looked around the town but couldn't find her. Finally, he asked the others if they had seen her and they told him what had happened...
Ciithia had been killed and slaughtered right after he left by the one he least expected, the child who had brought him the letter. As it turned out the child was a fully fed vampire who used magic so in actuality was not a child but only retained his child form from when he had contracted the disease. Turns out he was also part of the plan and for helping they let the vampire have Ciithia for her blood. Newly married and it's already over. Just as fast as his joy was given it was taken away and replaced with fury and rage not just for what happened for not being smart enough to realize it was a set up as well as grew a strong detest for all magic.
The town psychic appeared from the shadows and merely said "Good deeds will bring misfortune, you were warned." as mysteriously as she appeared she vanished. The only thing he was able to take satisfaction of any kind was the fact the vampire was killed in his sleep as he made the mistake of staying at the Inn.
After this Maulstaag went into depression and left town in the night traveling from town to town city to city drinking for a few years. Eventually, he decided it was time to move on and accept the fact Ciithia was gone and she was never coming back. Maulstaag was getting low on money and so decided to start doing requests again from others but nothing in this world is free. Everything has a price. If there was a job that involved killing anything magical he accepted it without hesitation. He knew he has sinned before and would again but never did he wear it proudly.
